YangisalsowellknownforhiscollaborationwithRobertMillsindevelopingagaugetheoryofanewclass.Such"Yang-Millstheories"arenowafundamentalpartoftheStandardModelofparticlephysics.

HereceivedhisBachelorofSciencedegreefromNationalSouthwesternAssociatedUniversityinKunmingin1942.Twoyearslater,hestudiedforhisMasterofSciencedegreewithafullscholarshipatTsinghuaUniversity,atthetimealsoinKunming.HeattendedtheUniversityofChicagoonaTsinghuaUniversityFellowshipinJanuary1946.TherehestudiedforhisPh.D.withEdwardTellerandafterreceivingitin1948,remainedforayearasanassistanttoEnricoFermi.In1949hemovedtotheInstituteforAdvancedStudyandin1965totheStateUniversityofNewYorkatStonyBrook.
HehasbeenelectedaFellowoftheAmericanPhysicalSocietyandtheAcademiaSinica,andwasawardedanhonorarydoctoratebyPrincetonUniversity(1958).
YangmarriedChih-liTu(杜致礼),ateacher,in1950andhastwosonsandadaughter:FranklinJr.,Gilbert,andEulee.Hisfather-in-lawwastheKuomintangGeneralDuYuming.
HeretiredfromStonyBrookin1999andreturnedtoTsinghuaUniversity.Hiswifediedinthewinterof2003.Attheageof82,Yangbecameengagedto28-yearoldWengFan(翁帆)whoisstudyingforhermastersatGuangdongUniversityofForeignStudies,andmarriedherinearly2005.HehassincereceivedmuchcriticifromsomeChinesemedia.
