自古以来，“实战经验”都被认为是衡量一支军队实力的重要标准。以美国为例，建国时间只有240多年，但美国没有参与战争的时间却只有16年。有人曾做过这样一个统计：在1945年到2001年间，全球共发生了248次武装冲突，其中由美国发起的多达201场，占冲突总数的81%.

再加上美国的军工科技始终领先全球，所以“实战经验丰富”且武器装备先进的美军，一直都是公认的“地表最强军队”。
不过，近年来随着中国军力水平的不断提升，有观点认为，再过几十年，中国军队的整体实力将超越美军。但与此同时也有人质疑：虽然中国在短时间内发展出了大量的先进武器，可是毕竟缺乏实战经验，这让他们如何跟美军竞争？对于这个问题，很多人给出了自己的回答。

The American experience has been mostly in asymmetrical warfare against predominantly guerrilla-style enemies (Saddam’s army collapsed too quickly to provide battle experience). Depending on where the battlefield was, it is unlikely this experience would stand the US in particularly good stead, beyond the personal experience of troops enabling them to cope with the stress of combat.
